Australian Automobile sales trends and performance over a decade - what is changing?

The Australian new-car market made a mockery of economic doomsayers last year, with sales climbing to record levels.Official sales figures for 2012 released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries today showed that sales were up by 10.3 per cent to 1.112 million, driven by strong growth in SUVs and four-wheel-drive utesAustralian motor vehicle sales for 2012 are well  past  the million unit mark for only the fifth year in history. At 1,008,437 units it was down 2.6% on 2010 and wasachieved despite a number of adverse circumstances. These included an uncertain global economy struggling under the debt burden issues discussed earlier, a stringof natural disasters domestically (storms and floods in key markets of Queensland,Victoria and Western Australia) and internationally (earthquake/tsunami in Japan andfloods in Thailand) causing severe disruptions to production and stock shortages for some brands.
How did the states perform saleswise?
The state of NSW outperformed the others by recording a figure of 341,221 closely followed by the state of Victoria with 293,778 vehicles. NT registered the lowest sales with 11,599 vehicles registered in 2012
What have been the trends over the past decade?
The Austraian auto industry has seen a paridigm shift across the industry. While the overall market results were encouraging, there were some grim tidings for the embattled Australian car industry, with sales of the traditional family staples slumping to record lows. The Commodore and Fordís Falcon each saw sales dip by more than 25 per cent in 2012 as buyers continued to switch to small cars and SUVs
 What is the future?
Based on the trands over the past decade, the future looks encouraging and seem to defy the words of the doomsday predictions made by some economists.
